Fugitive Father Spotted With 3 Kids in Wilderness Years After Vanishing
‘THEY’RE ALL ALIVE’
A father who abducted his children in late 2021 and has been on the run since was spotted with the kids in the New Zealand wilderness. It was the first confirmed sighting of the family since they went missing after Tom Phillips got into a fight with the children’s mother. “I’m so relieved to see all three of my babies,” Cat Phillips told The New Zealand Herald on Tuesday. “They’re all alive.” Tom Phillips and Jayda, 11; Maverick, 9; and Ember, 8, were wearing camo gear and carrying large packs when they ran into some teenage pig hunters in an isolated part of central North Island. The teens asked the kids if anyone else knew they were out there. “Only you,” they answered and kept walking. The man had a long beard and was carrying a gun, so the teens let the family pass, but they quickly shot cellphone video and called police, one of the teens’ grandfathers told 1News. A search of the area proved unsuccessful, but police said the sighting had opened up a “positive line of inquiry.”
